Information for Professionals
Carers are all around us.
In your role, you may come into contact with a carer without even realising it. They could be a customer, patient, member of the public or colleague, and their caring role may not always be immediately obvious.
In fact, many people may not even recognise themselves as a carer.
This information will help you understand who carers are, how to recognise when someone may be providing care, and how you can make a positive difference by offering the right support.

What is an Unpaid Carer?
An unpaid carer is someone who regularly looks after a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who needs support because of a disability, illness/health condition, mental health issue or illness, substance misuse or old age.
They may help with everyday activities such as washing, dressing, eating, taking medication, attending appointments, shopping, cooking, cleaning or providing emotional support. An unpaid carer does not receive payment for providing this care and does not necessarily have to live with the person they care for.
We support carers of all ages, including young carers, with some as young as 5 years old taking on caring responsibilities for a family member. We support young adult carers with the transition into their adulthood caring role.
