Carers Champions in the community

Usually a member of the administration team in medical practices, a Carers Champion liaises with doctors and other practice medical staff, ensuring that patients who are family carers are aware of the support The Carers Centre offer in Telford encouraging them to take advantage of the benefits of registering with us.

A Carers Champion is someone who is aware of the issues a carer may be facing.  They understand the important role of a carer and can pick up on the signs of someone who is caring often when the person may not know it themselves.  Champions appointed through the Carers Centre have had training so they have information about the Carers Centre and the services we offer as well as being able to support people to make that first step of contacting us when they need support.

We have had great success in appointing Carers Champions in medical practices throughout Telford and Wrekin. We have 15 surgeries on board and recorded an large increase in referrals from them into the Carers Centre. Doctors now ask patients as a matter of course whether they are caring for someone, and with their permission pass their details on through the surgery Champion (usually an administrator, or the Practice Manager) to the Carers Centre.
